Man Who Grew Up Without Father Becomes Dad To Millions With Wholesome YouTube Videos
Rob Kenney grew up without a reliable father figure, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a fantastic dad to his own kids — and children everywhere.
The Washington native’s father walked out on his family when he was just a teenager, leaving Rob and his seven siblings to raise each other. Now, the 50-something is making sure other children without fathers always have someone to ask, “Dad, how do I…?”
Despite his rough upbringing, Rob not only forgave his father, but raised his daughter and son, Kristine and Kyle, into happy, successful adults.
“My goal in my life was to raise good adults,” Rob told Shattered Magazine. “I never wanted to be wealthy. I never wanted to be necessarily successful. My goal in life was to raise good adults — not good children but good adults — because I had a fractured childhood.”
But even after his children moved out on their own, Rob realized there are still many kids out there who don’t have a male role model to guide them. So, he created “Dad, how do I?”, one of the most wholesome YouTube channels in existence.
In his weekly videos, Rob shows viewers how to do everyday tasks, including tying a tie, ironing a shirt, and unclogging a drain. He also shares fatherly advice.
“I want it to be about everyday tasks, but I also would like to pass along some of the wisdom I’ve learned along the way to encourage people,” Rob added. “I thought I was just going to be showing people how to do stuff, but it’s kind of resonating on a whole different level.”
In fact, the word “resonating” is a bit of an understatement. Since Rob began putting out videos in April, he’s already amassed quite the fan base! But what’s really touched his heart are the messages he’s received from people who understand his pain.
“Some of the emotional responses I’ve gotten from people who don’t have fathers, or didn’t have a relationship with their father, or have lost their father, you know, and they’ve said they watched my videos in tears, just being reminded of missing their dad. It’s amazing,” he told WICU.
We’re sure Rob’s subscribers would agreed he is dad of the year material! This wonderful man is giving children everywhere the father figure they need, but doing so must be healing for him as well. You can find all his video on YouTube.
